We know physical and mental illness are intertwined. (remember there are many forms of mental illness, we are referring to depression) We want to take care of both our mental and physical health, but at different times of the year it becomes more difficult for some. November through February are considered holiday months, and it is through these months that we see more mental illness (ie. depression, etc.) Part of it is because of the changes in weather and part are family gatherings, or lack of, feelings of belonging, and all that goes with the holidays in general tend to be difficult for some.
What are things we can do to keep physically and mentally fit year round?

  1. To be physically fit, people could go outside everyday. Even if it is only for five minutes. Just letting your skin feel the warmth of the sun will help bring your mood up. Even better, people could exercise to take their minds off things that are stressful. To be mentally fit, people could hang with families and friends to be social. Talking things over could often help people feel better.

  2. Some people have depression because they feel lonesome, especially during the holidays. One way to keep this from happening is by spending time with family, besides during the holidays. Ways to keep physically fit is through constant exercise. Also, you can keep your mind fit by thinking games.

  4. Go for walks or try yoga and meditation. Yoga pushes you to use your mind and your body, plus you can do it anywhere so I think that would be a good thing to practice. Also meditation, just sitting there and calming your mind could help you mentally and even physically because you would have more energy afterwards.

  5. One can find fun activities that can be done with others, do some puzzles or something with friends, or go to the gym (one can even socialize there also).

  6. I think it is important to set up an exercise program that can continue all year long. Perhaps, joining a gym or working with weights for strength training at home. It is also important to include some form of cardio exercise, such as, running or bike riding. This will help you stay physically and mentally healthy. Especially during the holidays when things always seem more stressful. Exercise is a great way to help with stress, depression and fatique.

  7. To stay mentally fit, we should always spend time with family and friends. It's healthy to meet with other people who appreciate you and love you for who you are. During the holidays or not, we always need physical interaction with other people.
Physically, to stay fit and healthy, we should always watch what we eat. If not, we could easily slip into unhealthy habits, especially during the holidays.

  8. In today's world, more so than ever, people are overburdened with too many things to do and not enough time to do them. This means that they have even less time for relaxing. In addition to exercise each week to maintain physical fitness, I think one of the most important things to do to improve mental health is to set time aside to allow oneself to completely relax--not just watching TV or reading a book (though these are good as well), but just going somewhere, being still and not thinking of anything in particular at all. I like being outside, so one of the things I like to do when I want to relax is just stay still and watch the birds fly, or watch the sun rise or set, or just lay down in the grass and watch the clouds go by in the sky. It gives me peace of mind by thinking of only what nature is showing me and how beautiful it is, as well as what life lessons can be learned from observing it. I always find that this re-energizes me. In a “Winnie the Pooh” cartoon, the character Christopher Robin tells Pooh that while he's sitting in a tree, he is doing “nothing,” but in today's world, doing nothing is sometimes the best way to spend one's free time.

  10. A great way to stay fit both physically and mentally is to exercise with others. Having someone to talk to gives the illusion of time going faster, so the exercise seems to go faster as well. Whether it's biking, or running, working out on the gym, having a friend is always great.

  11. There are many ways to be fit mentally and physically. To be physically fit you should exercise daily and eat nutritious meals. Exercising can also help you mentally because of the chemicals that are released in your brain when working out. Keeping stress levels low can be beneficial to your mental health as well.

  12. Year-round activities to keep fit would include taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Another important one I like to do is to try and park far away whenever possible and walk the extra amount.

  13. Physically there are countless ways to keep yourslef fit either though a gym, studio, running, or work outs at home. Keeping mentally fit requires different types of excersise, by meeting with people whom you like is one of the simplist forms of stearing away from mental illnesses like depression. Art; expresing yourself though a way that can NEVER be proved wrong excersise our creativity and also alows us to be self reflective. Yoga can allow us to do both. There is no exact way to do any yoga pose being that all our bodies are different, though it can keep you fit it is not a WORKout on our body it is a gift we give our body. It rejuvinates the body and molds it back to our most peaceful state. The mind is given a rest and like meitation is not set to focus on nothing or emtyness but to simply NOT focus, that is a big releif after hours apon days apon months of focus and distraction.

  14. To stay physically fit a person needs to create an exercise plan and stick to it. Also, they should do little things, such as take the stairs instead of the elevators, or walk to the store instead of driving. To stay mentally fit a person also needs to exercise, however they need to have good social interactions.

  15. Since physical and mental health are closely related, physical exercise will often contribute to mental health. During holiday months, people tend to get stressed out in all their preparations and forget to exercise. A solution to this problem is setting aside a certain part of the day for exercise, such as morning walks, and sticking to this plan. Daily physical exercise, even during the busiest times of the year, will contribute to mental health and therefore to overall well-being.

  16. It's true that during the holidays people tend to become more prone to both the decay in mental and physical fitness. When in times of chaos and constant involvement, one can lose sight of important goals, morals, and ideals. Because of this, it's important to take some time off for yourself - whether it be a day or just five minutes - we all need a break from life once in a while.
