We must realize walking is a mode of transportation. In most of the world, people walk to get places. They walk to school, they walk to work. If they don't walk, they ride a bike. However, where we live, our car-culture has given us a generation of children/young adults who don't consider their feet to be a mode of transportation. Most often, the bus or mom takes them to school. If the bus doesn't stop at their front door, parents give them a ride to the bus stop. Parents drive them to activities-including sports activities. Their friends drive them to the mall. They have the impression that anywhere worth going is too far to walk, when in fact, that walk might take only 15 minutes. It may not actually BE a long walk, but it might seem far when you've only ever driven it. One of the best things we can do is walk around our own neighborhoods and see how long it takes us to get places. I want you to try this.......try walking to your next destination. Mrs. D. will as well. Walk for 15 minutes down the street. How far do you get? Your feet aren't just for standing or walking they are designed to move you from point A to point B. And, amazingly they even work in bad weather! Walking is a basic mode of human transportation.....in addition to one of the best fitness activities. Walking, if done often enough will give you a sense of freedom and give parents a welcome break from driving you from point A to point B. I want you to make a concerted effort to spend the next week and beyond walking more often than not and let us know how you feel and what you've discovered along the way........I bet you'll feel better and your parents won't feel like 'taxi drivers!'

When I lived in california driving was my ONLY mode of transportation and as us teenagers reach the age of 16 we become even more excited to step inside an car because this time we are sitting in the driver' seat. Now that I have moved to a third-world country (D.R.) walking is how i get most places and has had a signifigant change in my daily excersise and freedom. I walk to school most days down a dirt hill and then after school walk to the beach or basketball courts with my friends. Using walking as a method of transportation has taught me to be more responsible and had improved my daily health.
ReplyDeleteActually, I almost always walk to parkview and back. It saves my mom trouble and counts as my PE! I almost never go anywhere else on foot, though. I have an absolutely terrible sense of direction. Maybe if I had a handheld GPS I'd travel on foot more often. Although Bikes do do the job better and get you exercise as well. Maybe I should try biking to Parkview.
ReplyDeleteI walk or ride bikes, scooters, etc. to the basketball courts. Although sometimes I feel that walking is slow and boring, I found out that if you have someone walking/talking with you, time goes by much faster. It always feels good to get from place to place without a car because it helps save the environment. I feel that walking is actually not very tiresome, but a great way to exercise.
ReplyDeleteMy mom makes me walk to friends houses who live close by and sometimes walk home from there too. We walk to the school to to walk around the track. I even walk to the store sometimes with friends.

Every morning my sister and I take my baby brother on a walk around our neighborhood. When we make the effort to walk where we want to go, I discovered that it is not as difficult. My sister and I get bonding time when we walk. It gives us time to catch up and talk about things. When I walk I feel better because of the fact that I am getting fresh air and walking is also very good for my health.
ReplyDeleteI live near a park and try to either walk or run for exercise. I also have three dogs who need walking, and one is only three months old and full of energy. I feel everyone wins, they get to burn off energy and I get exercise in the process. I do feel walking is a great form of exercise, and we should walk more often.
ReplyDeleteIf i ever want to go anywhere i have to ride my bike, that and i just got a bus pass, so that's cool. I also have two huge dogs who always love a good walk!!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy being outside, so I very much like going out walking or hiking. Also, since I have two dogs, taking good care of them necessitates that we walk together often. However, usually when we're actually going somewhere rather than just going out for a nice walk, we usually drive. As part of the experiment this week, we changed this. To see how far we could get in fifteen minutes, we walked to the nearby Post Office where my dad works to see him while he was on break and then we went to a Chinese restaurant called “The Wok Experience,” across form the Post Office. I found that it took about fifteen minutes to go from my house to these locations. It was fun doing this experiment because I have walked to these places before, but I had never actually tried timing how long it would actually take.
ReplyDeleteOur neighborhood isn't very walking friendly. There are occasional crazy drivers, and our local shopping center doesn't have any sidewalks. We occasionally will walk to places nearby, and that is fun. If we are on vacation and staying in a hotel, we usually walk everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI have two dogs that i love to walk and they dont mind it either... haha. Walking is a great form of exercise and we should all try and get out there a little more often.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy walking places. Sometimes I will walk to my friends houses, the store, class, or other places I might need to go. It is a great form of exercise that is not difficult to do.
ReplyDeleteI have been really trying to walk more. Not only do I try to walk everywhere nearby, when my mom drives me places, we try to park farther away so that we can do more walking.
ReplyDeletei actually jug to the gym and walk back every day instead of driving, i love it. i just feel so relaxed.
ReplyDeleteI don't drive and rarely get a ride anywhere i want to go so walking is really my only way transportation. i love walking, if my family or my friends offer me ride i usually never take it because i am so use to walking or riding a bike i never think of having someone drive me wherever i need to go.
