January week 4

I've been reading research again.............did you know there's research that has shown that there's an obesity epidemic in America, primarily in children? To help combat this, the city of San Franciso is banning all free toys in McDonald's Happy Meals! McDonalds is offering these toys for purchase at an additional 10 cents. Burger King has joined this bandwagon and will be following suit soon. This ban went into effect in San Francisco, December 1st. The extra money received from these Happy Meal toys will be used to build a Ronald McDonald House. This new house will be by the University of California at San Franciso, UCSF, hospital in Mission Bay.
Your thoughts on the banning and extra fee imposed for Happy Meal toys.... What can we do as a society to help reduce obesity in our young children, essentially our future? Or should society be responsible for this at all?
hmmmm...

  1. Whoa! That's amazing how kids are the ones that need the help. I guess its all this commercialism about fast-food that is getting to the people.

  2. I think the extra fee imposed for Happy Meal toys is a good start at getting rid of child obesity. Many children ask their parents for a Happy Meal because they want to play with the free toy. Now that there is a surcharge for the toy product, parents will be more hesitant on spending the extra money, hence causing children to consume less Happy Meals. Hopefully, by taking one small step at a time, obesity will be reduced.

  3. I feel genetics plays a huge role in the structure and weight of children however parents are responsible for the healthyness of children and their weight. It is their role to provide and teach children about healthy life style choices.

  4. I believe that the extra fee for the toys will help reduce child obesity. Many times children ask for the Happy Meals only for the toys. This results in over eating, which can result in obesity. So I think that the charge is a good thing, because as "dmkddfun" mentioned, parents will be more reluctant on paying extra money, resulting in children eating less meals.

  5. I think this is a great start, many kids want the happy meals for the toys. I never really thought about who obesity would hit the most and i guess it would be kids.

  6. I think this is a good start in helping to reduce child obesity. If parents have to pay for the toys in happy meals they may be more reluctant to purchase them, thus reducing the problem.

However, I feel that at the same time, parents should be more responsible in teaching their kids proper exercise values, and providing them with better diets.

  7. Although links can be found between regularly eating at McDonald's and obesity, I don't think we should be limited because of this. I honestly think the toys won't make a difference to come there; kids will simply spend the extra $0.10.

For a different perspective, candy causes cavities and introduces artificial sugar into the body. Candy is also packed with calories with little or no nutrition value. Should candy then be banned?

  8. I think that is absolutly crazy that young children ae being victim to this outragous desease known as abesity. There are millions of fast food restaurants around the world. The fact that Mc Donalds adds a free toy with the purchase of every happy meal is sad. I believe that they are doing this to leer kids into wanting a "happy meal." There is nothing happy about a "happy meal." Happy meals are greased foods filled with loads of fat. Hopefully by eliminating the free toy, less kids will be eager in wanting the happy meal. I believe that this is a great start.
